Beaverton Symphony Orchestra - Annual Chamber Music Concert

BSO will perform their Annual Chamber Music Concert series twice the weekend of April 1 - 3. The works featured are String Quartet No 2 by Allan Stephenson (1997), Deus Interludes for flute, violin and piano by Jacques Ibert, Piano Trio No 39, "Gypsy Rondo" by Franz Joseph Haydn and Piano Trio No 1, Opus 8, in C major by Dmitri Shostakovich.

"Trio" Exhibit at Artisan Renovations

A "Trio" of local women artists will have their works featured at Artisan Renovations as the business continues to sponsor artists by turning their showroom into an artists' gallery.

The trio consists of Chelsea Hubbs, Katy Jorgensen and Christine Merritt. The visual arts spectrum is well represented with pottery, sculpture, drawings, acrylic and watercolor paintings; most of the pieces are available for purchase.

The exhibit opens with the traditional wine, cheese and artists' reception beginning at 12 pm on Saturday, April 9. This reception, lasting until 4 pm, is free and open to the public. ACMA - Dance West to present "Open the Doors to Dance"

Celebrate the Arts while supporting their importance in educating our youth. Beaverton Arts and Communication Magnet Academy's Dance West will perform a series of dances aimed to touch a chord in everyone.

Classical choreography will be featured in the works, "Snow Ballet" and "Swan Lake Waltz", while "Tap Dance Concerto" integrates ballet and tap! Contemporary work, "America's Shadow", promises to raise awareness to the widespread homeless issue students of the Beaverton School District face. Lighter fare demonstrating artistry and whimsy includes, "I Wish" and "Scent of a Woman Tango". A salute to Broadway features selections from "West Side Story". The program will conclude with tap favorite, "42nd Street".

All concert proceeds go to scholarships for continuing education, support of basic student needs, as well as guest artists and master teachers.

Art marches on for new City Hall Art Exhibit

ZAP (Zimbabwe Artists Project), is a celebration of artistry and accomplishments by women in Weya, a small rural village located 100 miles southeast of Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe. ZAP was born out of a necessity for women in this rural area as a means to provide the most basic needs for their families.

In response to this need, the German Volunteer Service invited art teacher, Ilse Noy, to Weya for the purpose of teaching the women how to develop their daily needlework skills into economic assets. The Weya Textile Project when it started in 1987 was comprised of 9 women who created pieces geared to tourists. Today, hundreds of women are involved, and their audience has grown substantially. Each piece depicts life within this very difficult environment, but they offer stories of hope, too.

A key contributor to growing international recognition arose from an encounter with Dick Adams, retired professor of Sociology at Lewis & Clark College. During a 1997 student led tour to the region, the family hosting Professor Adams asked for his help in discovering other markets for their art. What resulted is ZAP, with Professor Adams the founder of the project, and director for a decade.

Techniques include oil paint on board, ana batik appliqued panels, embroidery and fabric painting with each piece utilizing a vibrant color palette and exquisite detail.

Ten Tiny Dances - Call to Choreographers / Dancers now open

The weather outside masks the fact that the annual July event is only 4 months away! However, the time to prepare for Ten Tiny Dances has arrived. Beaverton Arts Commission has officially announced the Call for choreographers and dancers to utilize their talents for developing innovative, dynamic performances that are confined to a 4ft x 4ft, slightly elevated stage.

2011 marks the third year for Ten Tiny Dances, which is run in tandem with the Saturday Farmers Market. Previous performers are encouraged to apply, but must present fresh work or significantly modified original compositions.

Beaverton High School - Student Art Exhibit

Students of the Beaverton High School Art Department will be exhibiting a collection of multi media artwork at Artisan Renovations showroom. Works include watercolor and acrylic paintings, drawings, photographs and sculptures. This exhibit is the next chapter in Artisan Renovations year-long commitment to feature artwork by students of the Beaverton School District. The previous exhibit featured photographic works by students from ACMA (Arts & Communication Magnet Academy).

The exhibit opens Saturday March 5, with an artists reception from 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm. The reception, with wine and cheese being served, is free and open to the public. Regular showroom hours for the remainder of the exhibit are 10:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The exhibit runs through March 26.

Beaverton Civic Theatre premiers "Bus Stop"

"Bus Stop", written by Pulitzer prize winning playwright William Inge in 1955, is the inaugural play for Beaverton Civic Theatre's 2011 season. The play: a romantic comedy set in a diner in rural Kansas. The premise: travelers stranded during a severe snow storm and how they interact while stuck at the diner.

The play, adapted for the big screen in 1956, and staring Don Murray, Marilyn Monroe and Arthur O'Connell, received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations in 1957.

Beaverton Civic Theatre's opening is Friday, March 4 @ 8:00 pm at the Beaverton City Library auditorium. Opening night is also Community Partnership Night with New Friends of the Beaverton City Library, where the donation of a new or used book admits patrons for $5.

McMinnville Sunrise Rotary announced their schedule for the 3rd Juried Show and Sale of fine art. The Call to Artists is open to all Oregon artists and craftspeople producing original art. Fifty-five Oregon artists will be selected for the art show and sale. Funding for the multidisciplinary event was awarded by the Yamhill County Cultural Coalition. Celebration of Creativity - Fine Art Exhibit & Sale

Once the predicted snow clears out, everyone will be ready for some fine art and music, and to fill the bill, the Southminster Presbyterian Church announces its 33rd Annual Celebration of Creativity. The 4-day event is kicked off with a "First Look Gala" on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at 7:00pm. $10.00 opens the door to Hors d'oeuvres and jazz music by Blackburn & Duthie, as well as a "First Look" at the exhibit & sale.

Friday, March 4, the exhibit & sale is open to the public from 10:00am - 5:00pm, with an Artists' Reception starting at 7:00pm complete with musical accompaniment provided by Blackburn & Duthie. This event is free and open to the public.

Theatre classes for children offered by Beaverton Civic Theatre

Starting March 28, Beaverton Civic Theatre will offer classes for children, ages 8 - 15. Running for 4 weeks (March 28 - April 18), 2 courses, "Kids Begin" (4 - 6 pm) and "Kids Continued" (6 - 8 pm) will be introduced and continued in a second session (April 25 through May 16). The first course "Kids Begin" will offer children a chance to stretch their imagination through a series of games and activities. "Kids Continued" is for the child with more experience or just wants to learn more about acting as a profession.

Eventually, those who are interested can move on to be a part of "Kids Express" performance group.

Jackie Cutler will teach both classes. Cutler has an extensive forty year career in Theater Arts and has an MFA from University of Portland. Her passion is now focused on creating a nationally recognized Performing and Fine Arts educational program with BCT, as well as teaching and directing the Children's Theatre Programs.

Performing Arts Summit

ACMA Photography Exhibit at Artisan Renovations

Last year, the staff at Artisan Renovations in Beaverton opened their showroom to artist exhibitions, and they plan to do so throughout 2011. This year's theme will focus on the talented students from Beaverton area schools.

On the schedule for January is a photography exhibit of over 40 works by students from the Arts & Communication Magnet Academy. Many of the works are available for purchase, most within the $30 - $50 price range.

The exhibit opens January 29, running through February 26. An artist's reception, with wine and cheese, will be held Saturday, January 29, from noon - 4:00pm. This event is free and open to the public. Regular showroom hours are Monday - Friday, 10:00am - 5:00pm.

Get to Know More Art - January City Hall Exhibits

It's hard to believe that 2011 is already two weeks in, and people are still struggling to remember to write 2011 on documents instead of 2010. Did the holidays really happen? Yes they did, and now that a new year has begun, so has new art at Beaverton City Hall. Another group of talented artists has their work on display throughout the facility.

Starting on the first floor are some vibrant paintings by Shelley Radovich, a member of the Oil Painters of America, Watercolor Society of Oregon and Oregon Society of Artists.

Photography by Judith Schmidt is featured on the second floor lobby. She is a lifelong visual artist who studied art at Portland State University and art therapy at the College of Santa Fe in Santa Fe New Mexico.

Visitors to the third floor are treated to "Hands on Interactive Kinetic Sculpture" by Clay Hoffman, where movement adds an element of surprise to the viewer. Also on the third floor is paintings and shadow boxes containing painting and sculptural elements by Harriet Kaufman Levi. Rounding out the third floor are intricate compositions in mixed media and fiber by Nanette Davis.

Performing Arts Center report presented to City Council

The Beaverton Arts Commission requested that ECONorthwest update the interested citizens of Beaverton their feasibility study regarding a performing arts center for Beaverton. The study was first conducted in 2004.

This update, and their recommendations, will be made to Beaverton's City Council on Tuesday night, January 4 during the scheduled council meeting. The meeting begins at 6:30pm, and is held in the Forrest Soth Council Chambers of Beaverton City Hall, 4755 SW Griffith Drive, Beaverton OR 97005. It's December, and the holiday season is in full swing. For those out and about preparing for the festivities, a visit to city hall is highly recommended in order to view the latest creations by Beaverton area artists. Featured this month are works in wood, as well as photographs and paintings.

Amato's Gallery - "Holiday Tree Sculptures"

"Holiday Tree Sculptures" is a special holiday exhibit featured at Amato's Gallery. The exhibit, which is also a silent auction, opens December 4, at 1:00pm through December 18, at 5:00pm.

The exhibit will kick off at Amato's with an opening reception on December 4, between 1:00 and 4:00pm. The tree sculptures featured at left are by Linda J. Baker, Donna Sanson and Bruce Ulrich.

November City Hall Artist Exhibitions

If you haven't been to Beaverton City Hall in a while, a visit is in order . A nice array of work is currently being exhibited: Mixed-media, painting and sculpture.

On the first floor, you will find vidid, abstract paintings from members of PDX!WAM - Nikki Dilbeck, Ann Fullerton, Tupper Malone and Collin Murphy.

The landscape paintings of John Mohney can be found on the second floor.

The third floor is where you will find the mixed-media work of Susan Gallacher-Turner, sculpture by G.E. 'Mac' MacDonald and paintings by Jennifer Predoehl.

These works will be on display through November. The exhibit will rotate with a new collection the first part of December.

Beaverton Community Band - Fall Concert

The Beaverton Symphony Orchestra is set to perform their Fall Concert Series November 12 & 14, 2010. Featured composers are Sergei Prokofiev - Lieutenant Kije Suite, William Walton - Crown Imperial March and Johannes Brahms - Symphony #3 in F Major.

BSO was founded in 1984, and is led by musical director, Travis Hatton.

"Get to Know Art" - Panel Discussion Follow up

The meeting commenced with the Forum President, Vincent Degoc, welcoming the live and TVCTV audience. He then proceeded to give a short history about Jayne Scott, the Executive Director for the Beaverton Arts Commission. She took the helm and launched her presentation by introducing the audience to BAC that included an acknowledgement of its roots, current programing and strategic goals, including the building of a Performng Arts Center within the city of Beaverton.

She then introduced Valerie Otani, a Portland area sculptor who has an extensive background in public art, and who was responsible, along with Bill Flood, for the development of the Beaverton Master Art Plan. During her presentation, Valerie mentioned the core values of Significance, Artistic Excellence and Diversity that are keys to the integration of public art into the Beaverton scenery, including temporary and permanent sculpture installations, as well as murals.

Next to take center stage was Melissa Riley, the Executive Director and President of the Beaverton Civic Theatre. Melissa related how when she started investigating working in theatre after serving as an Assistant Director on the set of Laika's "Coraline", she had signed up for doing one play, but the response had been so favorable, that BCT commits to three plays each year and one musical. She announced the 2011 schedule, and it promises to be a good one. It will be posted to the BAC website in the very near future.

Following Melissa was local artist Donna Sanson. She is a relative newcomer to the Beaverton area, but what she noticed right away was the need for gallery spaces, a method for the talented artists of Beaverton to introduce their work to the community. To address this need, Donna, along with Karen Amato of Amato's Floral, recently took up the challenge of renovating a space in Old Town Beaverton and turning it into a joint venture. The new space, known as Amato's Floral & Fine Art Gallery, features a small cooperative of semi-local artists who commit to keeping their work fresh and being available for events.

To round out the discussion was Jessica Jarret, the executive director for CAN, the Creative Advocacy Network. She focused on how the tri-county area stacks up in funding the arts compared with other similar demographic areas, and the news wasn't good. She went on to explain that CAN is creating a template for which there could be sustained, public funding for the arts if every citizen in the area contributed $1 per month, per year.

Then came the tough part, the question & answer session from the live audience, and there were some tough ones, such as:

How can a entity expect funding in these tough economic times?
What's wrong with a coloring book and crayons to spur artistic creativity?
How can this be funded without raising property taxes, or robbing Peter to pay Paul?
What about a relationship with OPB?
What comprises the 4% of public funding?
What type of relationship can be established with the Oregon Community Foundation?
How does BAC conduct its fundraising activities?
With all the competition, what methods work in promoting the entity?

Each of the presenters filled in the blanks in their areas of expertise. Funding allocation is still being fine-tuned, and it has been demonstrated that incorporating art into teaching results in greater creativity on all fronts, which leads to innovative solutions. CAN has established relationships with many partner organizations, and how they fit into the final picture has yet to be defined. As for funding in Oregon, 2% comes from the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC), 1% from the state level and even less from federal initiatives. Most of the panel agree that the best way to advertise is having a good product and letting people's enjoyment of and discussion about it do the promoting.

The Open House Mural is on Display at City Hall

Good news to share with those of you who visited the Arts Commission's booth at the City of Beaverton's Open House on September 11, 2010! The mural that so many talented citizens helped to create is now on display on the 3rd floor of City Hall. The two canvases are placed on either side of the entry to the Office of the Mayor.

The mural will be on display through the end of 2010. Consensus so far is that the mural project was such a hit that it may be a feature at upcoming events, so please stay tuned!

Bruce Ulrich featured artist for the month of November at Amato's Gallery

American Readers Theatre (A.R.T.) performs "Animal Farm"

Beaverton Celebrates Art at Annual Parade

When the team gathered at 8:30am on Saturday, September 18, the sun was shining. By the time they rounded the last corner, it was starting to drizzle. It didn't matter, though, because the team was celebrating Art! 15th in line, behind two classic cars and the City's Councilors and ahead of the Chamber of Commerce, the troupe representing the Beaverton Arts Commission marched.

Art was being celebrated by: Ji Suenghee, representing dance; Margaret Farnsworth, representing costume design; Ian Morris representing Masque Alfresco; Brenda Boylen representing painting; Pete Galluzzo representing music and Susan Gould representing photography.

Carrying the banner for the Beaverton Arts Commission were Carly Scott and Jayne Scott, Executive Director of BAC. Open House Wrap Up

The weather was perfect; not too hot or cold with gradually clearing skies. The canvas was prepared and ready for dozens of acrylic miniature masterpieces!

The Arts Commission booth was a hit. Each 12" x 12" square was filled in by the time the event came to a close. It was such a popular stop, that artists were still creating even as the event crews came to collect tents and tables!

The Arts Commission thanks everyone who shared their time and talent on Saturday, especially the wonderful volunteers, to create a living history of Beaverton. It is a safe bet that this experience will happen again at future events and locations.

Arts Commission at Beaverton's city-wide Open House

This Saturday's Farmer's Market will be a little different. The City of Beaverton is sponsoring an Open House for the community. The purpose: to inform about the findings of a recent study regarding Beaverton's vision for the future. Not surprising, access to cultural activities was high on the list.

Please join Beaverton Arts Commission on Saturday, September 11, between 10:00am and 2:00pm in creating a "portable mural" commemorating the survey results as the city plans for the future. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to help guests create acrylic, 12" x 12" square masterpieces on the giant canvas.

Beaverton's Last Tuesday of 2010

Should we, or shouldn't we? That was the question on August 31. It was cloudy, cooler than average and raining on and off. The show had been scheduled 6 months prior; local artists and businesses had reserved space to exhibit. It was decided, "the show must go on".

In spite of the autumn-like weather, Patrick Lamb rocked the crowd, and Klinton Halliday impressed with his dancing and music representative of the ancient classical Indian art form of "Bharata Natyam".

In spite of the inclement weather, the event was a success, and a good time seemed to be had by all.

BAC is already hard at work planning for the 2011 Beaverton Last Tuesday series, as a way to share with the community, Good Art, Music and Food at The Round.

Join the Beaverton Arts Commission (BAC) to celebrate the recipients of the 2010 Outstanding Achievement in the Arts Awards. Students will be recognized for their outstanding achievements. Individuals, organizations and businesses will be honored for their significant contributions to the arts. Beaverton Mayor Denny Doyle, the Beaverton City Council and Arts Commission President Diana Sullivan will present the awards at the City Council meeting on Monday, May 17th.

“I am in awe of the tremendous talent of our art students,” said Mayor Denny Doyle. “I appreciate the contributions all of these individuals, organizations and businesses make to our community. We are a vibrant, cultural community because of the gifts they share with us.”

Nominated by their peers and selected by the Board of Directors of the Beaverton Arts Commission, the individuals, businesses and organizations represented will be honored for their contributions to the arts. Student honorees were nominated by their teachers and selected by an arts education panel and approved by the Beaverton Arts Commission Board of Directors. Two, Outstanding High School Visual Art Students and Two, Outstanding Performing Art Students will each receive a $1,000 scholarship sponsored by the Beaverton Arts Foundation.

President’s Award: Oregon Arts Commission
The Oregon Arts Commission provides grant funding opportunities to support the Arts in the state of Oregon through programs which provide funding opportunities which include general operating support, project-specific support, and support for artists' professional endeavors. The Oregon Arts Commission has been a pivotal supporter of the Beaverton Arts Commission over the past 25 years.

Arts Leadership Award: Scott Palmer, Artistic Director, Bag and Baggage Productions
Scott is being recognized for his tireless dedication to increasing the visibility of, and building audiences for, the performing arts in Washington County. His efforts have led to grant funding, partnership building and the launch of a quarterly Washington County Art Guide publication.

Volunteer of the Year: Cynthia Rozanc
Cynthia has devoted countless hours of volunteer time to keep the Arts Commission website interesting, informative and up-to-date. She has also assisted with a major web redesign project.

Art in the Marketplace Award: ISing Community Choir
ISing Community Choir has helped to foster the appreciation of choral music in the community while raising funds for local non-profit organizations.

Outstanding High School Performing Art Student: Ariana Bird, ACMA
Ariana Bird, nominated by Julane Stites of ACMA (Arts and Communication Magnet Academy), is a gifted dancer in a variety of dance styles. Her original choreographed piece, “Cintatara,” was performed in March, 2010, at the National High School Dance Festival in Miami Florida. Ariana has been accepted to Cornish College of The Arts where she will continue to perfect her exquisite skills and further her creative education.

Outstanding High School Performing Art Student: Nathan Avakian, ACMA
Nathan Avakian, nominated by Raoul Bellis-Squires of ACMA, is the winner of the 2009 National Annual Young Theatre Organ Competition, is currently starring in “Nathan Avakian OUTSIDE THE BOX,” and designs and installs lighting for the ACMA theater department. This multifaceted performing artist has also participated in Oregon Children’s Theatre productions.

Reser Memorial Scholarship Award: Joseph Minh Hoang Nguyen, Aloha HS
Joseph, nominated by Tamara Ottum of Aloha High School, is a visual artist well-versed in a variety of mediums. Ms. Ottum states, “Joseph’s artistic exploration and dedication to understanding the artistic process has allowed him to polish and perfect each work that he creates. Joseph’s well-roundedness goes beyond art as he is greatly dedicated to humanitarian causes, founded the National Honors Society at Aloha HS, and has organized numerous fundraisers and community building events.”

Outstanding High School Visual Art Student: Alejandra Dominguez, Sunset HS
Alejandra, nominated by Cathy Cain of Sunset High School, is a visual artist enrolled in the two-year International Baccalaureate Art program offered at Sunset. Alejandra has received Scholastic Art & Writing Regional GOLD Key Awards for four years of her high school career. Ms. Cain states, “Driven by social responsibility, passion, and diligence, Alejandra has tried to give voice to Latino immigrants by creating pieces within the traditional Latin social art of the common man.”

A blank wall inspires art mural in Beaverton.

In the spring of 2007, Chuck Wilson said to his wife one day, “I'm tired of looking at a blank wall. Would you be willing to paint a mural there?” Gina Wilson, award-winning fine artist, replied, “Sure.”

By the next day, Wilson, Beaverton Sub Station owner, had called the mayor, the arts commission and the owner of the building with the blank wall, Ickabod's Tavern. Everyone thought the idea was wonderful, but there was a catch.

“It turns out that murals were under the laws of signage at the time and only a certain percentage of a business could be in signage,” explains Gina Wilson. There was a way around the law, a variance permit, but it could cost up to $3,600. Although the mayor was willing to wave the variance, he suggested they wait. He wanted to change the law.

A year or so later, the law was changed designating murals as art instead of signage. The Beaverton Arts Commission formed a mural committee and Wilson submitted her design. Three months later, Gina was turning the blank wall on the back of Ickabod’s Tavern into an art mural for the City of Beaverton.

“Just me and my ladder,” said Gina. “There were a lot of people who were willing to help, but I’ve never made a mural that size before.” Gina learned on the job and it involved a lot more than just painting. “My husband power washed the wall. Bonnie, from Ickabod’s, painted the whole building so the surface was fresh paint for me. Once you have the idea, you grid it out and get it up there. Then, you kind of want to tweak the lines and move things a little bit here and there. The brown of the mural is actually the brown of the whole building. So although, I painted over the brown sometimes, because I’m moving lines around, most of the brown was already there, so it was really a matter of getting the lines in right and putting in the bits of color.”

The mural concept evolved out of Gina’s figurative abstract work as well as the site itself. The mural’s brown color reflected the color of the bank building next door. The four blue figures matched the number of the trees planted in front of the mural. The color purple, the only secondary color missing from the mural, will appear in the blooming bushes along the wall in the spring. “I looked at it as three different ways in which I dance with it. I’m really trying to make it interact with its environment,” Gina explained.

Decades ago, Gina and her husband Chuck, graduates of University of Illinois, packed up their truck and moved to Portland. Together, they’ve owned the Beaverton Sub Station, renovated an historic 1800 farmhouse and raised two daughters. “Mostly I’m enjoying life with my family, getting to know my children, helping Charles and working hard at my own craft and my own art,” Gina says.

Her art, family and community have come together before as you can see when you enter the deli. All along the side wall is a mural that started as a project for Gina’s two daughters and their friends, but now continues to evolve as customers come in and add pictures they’ve found. “It started about 12 years ago,” said Gina. “We’re still working on it and it’ll never end. It’s just fun and a real sense of community.”

The new mural for the city of Beaverton gave Gina another way to connect her art with her home town. “Anytime we interact in our community, we feel more like it belongs to us and that’s a really good feeling. I feel more involved and it’s empowering,” said Gina. “We really can change things. We thought we’d like a mural and in the process, laws got changed.”

The change that started with Chuck Wilson’s wish for a better view outside his window led to a beautiful new mural for the whole Beaverton community to enjoy. Gina hopes this means more art all around the city, “Hopefully there will be a lot more murals, now. I want to encourage people to work with the matching funds program and get other murals started.”

The Beaverton Arts Commission is very excited about a new arts initiative in the area—Arts Partners. This program operates under the general leadership of The Regional Arts and Culture Council, and aims to bring access and equity in arts education to all k-8 students in the Portland Metropolitan Area.

We support this initiative and others like it because we believe they can contribute significantly to the development of a healthier, more productive, and more creative society. We have substantial reasons for maintaining this belief.

For example, according to a recent study of Education Department data,

“If your teen-agers want to be in the high school band or drama club, let them. High School students who take music lessons and join theatre groups do better than other students in math, reading, history, geography and citizenship.”

“If young Americans are to succeed and to contribute to what Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan describes as our ‘economy of ideas’, they will need an education that develops imaginative, flexible and tough-minded thinking.” Education Secretary Richard Riley said in a message accompanying the foundation-funded study. “The arts powerfully nurture the ability to think in this manner. Get your kids involved in the arts!”

Beaverton's Perspective on Public Art

Public art is visually or experientially meaningful artwork that is accessible to the public. Public art refers to original works of art in any artistic medium, permanent or temporary, a single event or piece, a series of installations or events, or part of an ongoing process enhanced over time. Public art in Beaverton can be as grand as the interior front wall of the Beaverton Library or as simple as artist-designed medallions marking historic properties.

Public art enhances the experience of people in public spaces, inspiring pride of place and contributing to the deeper understanding of that place, its people and history. Public art is a powerful tool in urban place-making—creating lasting connections between people and memorable public places.

In 2008, consultants Bill Flood and Valerie Otani began an evaluation of Beaverton’s 22 year old pubic art program and recommended ways to make the program more visible, accessible and engaging.

Beaverton’s status as the most diverse city in Oregon is a tremendous resource in creating a rich urban environment. Public art projects will welcome Beaverton’s ethnic communities and strive to involve these communities in arts planning and implementation. The public art collection will also include artwork of diverse media, scales and styles.

One of the goals of Public Art is to overcome the challenges that Beaverton faces with the lack of a defined downtown, traffic, identity, and past development issues. “This new Public Art Plan is a first step toward enhancing and enriching our public spaces and building upon our ‘sense of place’ in Beaverton. Public art is a powerful tool that we can use to improve livability in our City, provide a connection to our community and reflect Beaverton’s unique spirit.” –Mayor Denny Doyle

Funding for Public Art is currently supported through Economic Development funds. Future projects can be possibly supported through partnerships, developers, fundraising, neighborhood grants and through the urban renewal program as it develops.
